Here’s my problem. I love to eat but… I don’t always love food. Some people have said that I am the pickiest eater they have ever met. I like peanut butter but not jelly. I drink strawberry shakes but I can’t eat strawberries. I love crunchy ice berg lettuce but I think romaine lettuce takes weird. My taste buds are beyond the beyond bizarre. I think my picky habits have something to do with my dislike of soft textured food, but I’ll never really know for sure. Yes, it’s upsetting to pass by a delicious smelling dish and being unable to actually eat the food without wanting to puke. Sometimes I even crave food that I know I will hate eating. But looking on the bright side, once I find a food I enjoy, I become obsessed.
My latest obsession, in the tiny town of Kent, Connecticut, is the Margarita Pizza made at Docs Trattoria and Brick Oven Pizza. There has been only one time when I have ordered something other than the Margarita Pizza at Docs and it was merely a lapse of judgment caused by exhaustion. On Doc’s website, Roberto and Paulette Pizzo, the owners of Docs, claim that their “Pizza is made to perfection in our Brick Oven”. But this is an understatement. Their pizza is beyond perfection, it’s divine. This 13 dollar dish (not bad price wise) is a well blended combo of thin warm soft bread, fresh mozzarella, rich tomato and a pinch of basil. What I love most about this pizza is that there is no tomato sauce, just 5 perfectly placed tomatoes on top of the mozzarella. I usually pick the tomatoes off because of my picky habits but I leave the fresh tomato juice to add a bit more flavor. Also the pizza is fairly large, with a diameter of about 13 inches (give or take 2 inches), but I have found it impossible for me not to finish this entire platter. So if you ever stumble upon the humble town of Kent and have the craving for pizza after an exhausting hike on the Appalachian trail or long motorcycle ride down Route 7, go to Docs and experience the taste for yourself.
